Vor allem bei einem Gebäude wurde nicht gespart: Die Sheikh-Zayed-Moschee ist das weltweit drittgrößte islamische Gotteshaus – mit der größten Moscheekuppel überhaupt. Sie ist über 70 Meter hoch und spannt sich über 32 Meter.

„Klein, aber fein“ lautet die Maxime in Bahrain. Der Zwergstaat erstreckt sich auf 33 Inseln im Persischen Golf, deren Gesamtgebiet in etwa der Fläche Hamburgs gleichkommt. Trotzdem ist Bahrain ein großer Name, besonders unter Motorsportfans. Seit 2004 ist das Rennen auf dem Bahrain International Circuit eine Etappe des Formel-1-Zirkus. Mit einer Besonderheit: Aus Respekt vor dem muslimischen Glauben erwartet den Sieger hier anstelle der traditionellen Champagnerdusche eine Magnumflasche mit Rosenwasser. Bei einer Fahrt über die Teststrecke nahe der Hauptstadt Manama können Sie mit AIDA selbst echte Formel-1-Luft schnuppern. Wer es beschaulicher mag, kann die zahllosen Beach Resorts der Inseln genießen. Subtropisch und heiß. Regen fällt nur an wenigen Tagen in den Wintermonaten (Oktober bis April). Doch auch im Winter klettert das Thermometer auf 25 bis 35 ˚C. Die Luftfeuchtigkeit liegt bei bis zu 80 Prozent. Im Sommer werden Temperaturen von 45 ˚C erreicht.

In den VAE herrscht ganzjährig ein arides Klima. Regen gibt es zumeist nur während der Wintermonate. Die Temperaturen fallen selten unter 20 ˚C. Im Sommer (Mai bis August) klettert das Thermometer schon einmal auf 50 ˚C.
